Field Trips

At The Rink

A hands-on educational experience that combines STEM learning with roller skating.

Lessons Offered at the Rink

Aerodynamic Gliders

Aerodynamic Gliders

Grades: K–2, 3–5, 6–8

Students explore lift, drag, thrust, and air resistance by designing and testing gliders with different wing shapes. Students observe how design choices affect distance, speed, and stability.

Fix-a-Skate Lab

Fix-a-Skate Lab

Grades: 3–5, 6–8

Students disassemble and reassemble real skate components including wheels, bearings, and trucks. The lesson focuses on friction, rotation, torque, and mechanical systems.

Catapult Challenge

Catapult Challenge

Grades: 6–8, 9–12

Students design and build working catapults using everyday materials while exploring projectile motion, force, angles, and energy transfer.

Build-a-Boat Lab

Build-a-Boat Lab

Grades: K–2, 3–5, 6–8

Students explore buoyancy, density, and water displacement by designing floating boats. They analyze how shape, balance, and materials affect flotation.

Spaghetti Tower Challenge

Spaghetti Tower Challenge

Grades: 3–5, 6–8, 9–12

Using spaghetti and tape, students build the tallest free-standing structure possible while applying engineering concepts such as base support, stability, and structural design.

Penny Lab

Penny Lab

Grades: K–2, 3–5, 6–8

Students test how many drops of water fit on a penny while exploring surface tension, cohesion, prediction, and data collection.

Measuring CO₂

Measuring CO₂

All Grades

Students measure carbon dioxide output before and after physical activity, exploring respiration, aerobic exercise, and gas exchange.

Non-Newtonian Fluid Lab

Non-Newtonian Fluid Lab

Grades: 6–8, 9–12

Students create a fluid that behaves as both a solid and a liquid while exploring viscosity, pressure response, and states of matter.

Paper Tower Challenge

Paper Tower Challenge

All Grades

Students build tall towers using only paper and tape while focusing on load distribution, reinforcement, and structural stability.

Cells in the Rink

Cells in the Rink

All Grades

Students compare cell organelles to parts of a skating rink, identifying structures and matching them to real-world functions.
